What is a Cathodic Protection System? 
In many industrial and marine scenarios where CP is necessary, the scope of the need is very large. In these cases, a cathodic protection system (CPS) is used rather than a standalone CP solution. By designing a CPS for a specific endeavor, engineers are able to reduce long-term costs and limit the amount of long-term maintenance. In some cases, it’s possible to create a CPS that will last just as long as the length of the project and can then be discarded. In the cases of pipelines, for instance, the engineers must design a CPS that can itself be maintained and upgraded over the long term and in an efficient manner.

Types of Systems 
There are two main types of CPS: galvanic and impressed current systems. Galvanic protection is passive CP. Galvanic anodes are used because they are more electrochemically active than the metal they’re being attached to.
